Malaysia has changed a lot since I was last here 4 years ago. There seems to a lot of discussion on the social-political-economic condition of the country. One big change I noticed is that women are being allocated their separate coaches on the train. Every middle coach on the train is branded pink and only women, and women with children are allowed. No men are allowed. At first I thought it was ridiculous, until I boarded the train during rush hour, and found that the Women’s coach had plenty of seats....

After transiting in Kuala Lumpur, I finally arrived in Semporna today, flying from Kuala Lumpur to Tawau, and another hour and 15mins drive. Kuala Lumpur was hot and humid, the sky scrapers and stifling heat, such a huge contrast to Semporna. I was welcomed today in Semporna by a wonderfully cool seabreeze and three of WWF Semporna team members, Poh Leem, Natalee and Gavin. Which was very sweet of them, as it’s Sunday evening. A great start to the Semporna leg of my trip.

    Christine:

Hi Carol, I am very curious about your trip. And interesting to learn about this Women's coach on the train. So is it stimulate women on the train, or is it because they are otherwise (i.e. on their own, between other men) not allowed to travel?

    Carol Phua:

Hi Christine, from what i have heard, it's because some women feel uncomfortable travelling alone and sometimes are teased or hit on by men. ANd for long train journeys or crowded trains, they feel safer to be surrounded by women than men.

Hi Carol, not sure why but I had the same thought as Christine concerning the pink coaches. Glad to hear that my first thoughts on political and religious reasons were wrong. Shows to me that Malaysia is really developing rapidly. What is your schedule like coming days?
